Why we choose the White Dorper breed as the sire and a little background of the breed. The Dorper is very effective in increasing the growth rate, carcass size and quality of all the typical hair-type breeds such as the Katahdin. They are a fast growing meat producing sheep that is a well-proportioned breed with heavy muscled hindquarters. It is an easy care animal that produces a short light coat of wool and hair that is shed in late spring and summer.
This will be the first year (2013) we will have registered White Dorper lambs in addition to our usual Katahdin Dorper cross lambs. In the past we have had some difficulties finding a White Dorper ram to breed to the Katahdin ewes, so we were very excited when we found out Firethorn Farms was selling their Dorper flock. We were fortunate to be able to purchase the majority of their flock this past September (2012). We look forward to lambing out this great group of ewes and being able to provide some great stud rams and replacement ewes for sale in 2013.
